H.L.D.I regional workshop updates !

Hi folks. Greetings from the H.L.D.I team, we once again bring you the latest updates on activities that transpired during this month of April. As it was already clearly highlighted in our earlier posts, we had two workshops take place as follows:

Soroti student leaders workshop (hosted by Teso College Aloet):
On 5th of  April, we had a total of 155 student leaders locally known as prefects converge for a one day workshop in Soroti. The student were from 6 local schools that include; Teso College Aloet, Halcyon High school, Soroti municipal Secondary School, Olila High school, Light S.S and St. Mary’s Girls school                  .
The theme of the conference was “Being the best student leaders we should be”.

Earlier that day, Mr. Alfred Elalu Edakasi gave a lecture on the 7 Habits of highly Effective people, a book written by Stephen Covey.  The student leaders later in the day appreciated Cornerstone Development for thinking about people of their category (student leaders) and initiate a project geared toward improving their morality, character and build their capacities as student leaders.

The patrons( teachers from participating schools) were all grateful to Cornerstone for the same, the couldn’t hide their heartfelt appreciation to Cornerstone for its efforts to create change agents of Uganda’s future.

Later on that day, our guest speaker was Honorable Janet Rose Agayo, a former women councilor for Soroti District. She gave a speech on the topic “Challenges facing youth leadership today in Uganda and how to minimize them”. She challenge the youth oh how to be unique and change agents of the nation and start looking at themselves as leaders of today, not leaders for tomorrow as proclaimed by some current leaders.

Gulu student leader’s workshop (Hosted by St. Mary’s College Lacor) on 12th April 2014

The schools that participated include; St Mary’s College Lacor, Gulu High School, Sir Samuel Baker College, Restore Leadership Accademy and Gulu Secondary School. There was a total of 135 student leaders and 10 teachers.

Our guest speaker was Honorable Reagan Okumu, MP for one of the constituencies in Gulu. He also gave a  talk of being visionary and persistent as one of the approaches to overcome challenges facing youth leadership in Uganda.

Eluku Michael from Cornerstone Development also gave a lecture on the 7 Habits of Highly Effective people. The host school (St Mary’s College Lacor) was a very cooperative school. A part from organization and participation, the administration was very instrumental in seeing this event succeed.

PROGRAM LAUNCHED IN 2014

Hello friends. Greetings and love from Kampala, Uganda. On behalf of the High school Leadership Initiative, we would like to let you know that we are already "frying the fish". we finally started our operations this year.

INTRODUCTION:

The H.L.D.I…also known as the High school Leadership Development Initiative was launched early this year, though it started informally late last year (2013). This is a program that is geared towards fostering youth leadership development in the high schools in Uganda. It is merely a lower segment of A.Y.L F (Africa Youth Leadership Forum) a project that targets university students all over Eastern and Sub Saharan Africa. The High school program is meant to provide leadership mentoring to Higschool students while A.Y.L.F caters for university student leaders.

AIMS OF THE HIGH SCHOOL LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE (H.L.D.I)
*      To foster reconciliation, solidarity and unity among young Ugandan leaders across all the existing racial, tribal and religious divides.
*      To promote and support a servant leadership model for Ugandan Leaders.
*      To identify the principles and emulate the Leadership qualities of Jesus of Nazareth, and those leaders who throughout history have embodied these ideals.
*      To foster long term, meaningful relationships among young emerging Ugandan leaders across ethnic and religious divides.
*      To highlight and emulate successful African and world class leaders who have championed unity and reconciliation

EXPECTED OUTCOMES:
Ø  Provide an avenue where young leaders will interact and share leadership challenges within their nation.
Ø  To establish a network through which young leaders will spear head reconciliation in their nations.
Ø  To provide re-conciliatory mechanism that will allow the future leadership of the region to resolve conflicts.
Ø  Establish and develop principle based, servant leadership- based on the highest African virtues such as Love, forgiveness and unity.
